Primitive Pantry Cakes

Feel free to use this recipe, all I ask is that you give me credit for recipe and do NOT claim recipe as your OWN on blogs, websites or as a pattern recipe for resale. This is MY OWN recipe that I tweaked and tweaked until my cakes came out just right!!

4 tbs used coffee gounds (or more, depending on darkness you want)

1 cup sea salt

2 cups flour

3 tbs cinnamon, plus extra for rubbing cakes

2 tbs ground cloves

1 cup water (more or less, depending on consistancy of dough)

(I only used 3/4 cup water because my dough was wet from coffee grounds)

A few drops of scent oil

I mixed dough just until everything was combined and not too sticky.

Spray molds with cooking spray, coat with cinnamon, cloves or whatever spices you wish.

Mold dough into molds making sure the bottom is even.

Variations:

Try using brewed coffee instead of water to achieve color.

Try adding molasses to achieve dark color.

Try dipping or painting on scented wax and rub with spices for an even older look.
Oven temp 170'Baking times vary, my small molds were in there for about 6 hours.

Every hour I would remove cakes and spray lightly with cooking spray and rub on more spices. After 6 hours I turned off the oven and let them sit in oven to cool for a few hours.

After cakes were cool I rubbed cakes with a dry towel to remove loose spices and give cakes an older look.

You could add your own ideas to this to mix it up and make it interesting!!

This recipe was enough to make 5 smaller jello mold cakes.

*This is my own recipe that I tweaked and tweaked til my cakes came out just right*

9/4/08 Update
I fill my pans with dough, I do not use tin foil for the inside of the cakes at all and I have not had a single problem with them getting moldy. AS long as you completely dry them out in the oven you shouldnt have a problem either. Mine were in for about 6 hours, I then turned the oven off and let them sit inside, but I also started mine really early in the morning so I had plenty of time. You could let them sit overnight if need be! With that much sea salt it would be hard for anything to become moldy:)

They are wonderful! I am going to use your recipe and make some for myself. I need to find some cute molds like your's. I have some but made Chritams ornaments out of them! Hahaha!

I LOVE this!! I have a set of mold JUST like those, so I think I'll give it a try - I have a few questions--

"Every hour I would remove cakes and spray lightly with cooking spray and rub on more spices."--do you mean you would actually remove them from the pans or just remove from the oven?

"Try dipping or painting on scented wax and rub with spices for an even older look."---can you explain this a little more

I have some free time on my hands now, and I'm looking for something to do! LOL this looks like fun!

Hi Cheryl!

I hope you get this here! I searched your blog for a place to comment and couldnt find one?

"Every hour I would remove cakes and spray lightly with cooking spray and rub on more spices."--do you mean you would actually remove them from the pans or just remove from the oven?
---Yes, I would grab them with a potholder and flip them over on a dough board, spray both the cake AND the molds and rub down with spices.

"Try dipping or painting on scented wax and rub with spices for an even older look."---can you explain this a little more
---Depending on the size of your cakes, you could dip them in wax. Youde probably have better luck painting ON the wax. Try mixing instant coffee into your wax for a grubbier look?!! After you got the wax on you could rub more spices on, Youde have to work quickly doing it that way so the wax doesnt harden! Ive made the lil star and heart ornies and dipped them in the wax which is what made me think, "why not dip pantry cakes" as well:)

Let me know how they turn out!
