Have you ever seen so many?

Flying Ants?

I dont know if its the time of year or if its just here in NY but OMG!
We have red(orange) ants in the dirt, if you dig or plant anything you get a citronella smell from digging them up. They are ALL over outside along with the flying ants, Im assuming the queens. If you look down all you see is one big massive sparkly ant colony. I remember when I was kid I would see them this time of year. Maybe its a breeding thing...idk, but its NASTY!

You step outside and they crawl all over ya and fly around...ew!

I was spraying them with the hose and it smelled like I was burning a citronella candle, ha!

Creep ya out?

I am sufficently creeped out....My DH says they are probably termites. I don't know but they don't look like ants---mutants maybe.........
Hope they go away--soon!

EEEEYOW! Was that your hand??? Yuk! Anyhoo; love the salt dough; I have made up a bunch of cinni minis dough last week and dipped everything in cinnamon wax! How do you keep things from getting feet (wax) I tried dipping baby pinecones and they got feet on the back from laying them on the tin foil! I am so jealous of your goodies from the swap; you lucky dog you!!! Talk to ya soon; Merrie

We had those here in Wisconsin, too, on Friday. My husband and I were watching them. It was both those little orangey-yellow ants and the ones with wings. They came out of huge holes in the ground. Pretty bizarre!

Ewww is right ladies!

Barb - YES, they did have little holes in the ground in some spots. It has to be a breeding thing, at first I did think termites, but they arent red and they dont go away after a day!

At least I know its not just a NY thing:)

OH goodness - I encountered little teeny ants yeserday while working in my garden - but not until they were up my leg! Good thing the hose was handy! I have never seen them this teeny in my yard. Out came the chemicals I hate to use but they needed to be gone ASAP!

I am so glad you found your bittersweet! Can't wait to see pics of it! Thanks for letting me know it helped.

I agree that those are termites. They look a lot like flying ants, and that is where they live, in the ground. You can spray them or there are powders, but do it fast before they start to eat something you don't want. We had them in our last home, they swarm this time of year.

Marie,

I looked up termites (in fear that they were) Thank goodness they arent! They are the queen (flying ant) and its mating season unfortunetly. The consitions were JUST right last night (wet, humid, fall) and they were out. They are gone today. Its usually a one time thing during the season thankfully:)

Ooooh Linda - did ya freak? Haha, I woulda! I hate it when bugs of any kind crawl on me, so much for a country girl eh?

YUK! I am not a fan of critters either! And ants are on my hit list all the time. We have fire ants, but never had ants that give off a citronella smell? That's strange!

That's kinda creepy but in the spring we had a ton of black ants around here & we had to get some stuff from the hardware to get rid of them. I've never seen anything like yours. Hope they are gone!
