Just wondering if anyone knows what type of bird this is?
This guy has been visiting my feeders for a few weeks now and EVERYtime Ive tried to take pics something scares him away.
I wait EVERY morning around 8:30 and just yesterday we noticed there were TWO of them!
The red on them is SO pretty and bright. We've searched the web and bird books and can not narrow it down to the right species.
So, if anyone knows it would be great to solve the mystery that has been eating at me for weeks.

No idea...but very pretty!!!
I'm pretty sure that is a red male finch. As in most bird species, the male is always to brighter and prettier.Dawn
Oh it's so cute and yes it's a finch - we have lots of them (well, that's what my husband says they are...lol)

I have those kind of birds too. They are a purple finch. He's a cute little bird isn't he!

You dont know how BAD it was eating at my trying to find out the species, ha!
I looked them up after Dawns comment and sure enough found a picture of a purple finch and looked just like my backyard visitors.

yep---it is a purple or house finch---related to the goldfinch. and as already mentioned, the male is the beautiful one. beautiful to catch the female eye but also to distract any living creature away from the female. the female is drab in color so as not to attract attention and therefore provide safer haven for the nestlings. interesting how nature takes care of its weaker species, protecting it from the larger, stronger, more dominate species and insuring its future place in our world.....

I have those too! and I live in southern NY. Their song is beautiful! they sit outside my living room window on my porch and sing so loud I cant hear the TV sometimes. I also just got Gold finches and was soooo excited!! My husband and son think I am crazy because I have become a little obsessed with the birds in my yard, but all winter I kept my feeders full and had quite the array of birds so it made the winter a little more bearable.

We have them too, I also have identified it as a housefinch, male. The males have the pretty colors.
