I had my CT scan followup apt for my ankle today with the Orthopaedic Surgeon!
Ive got worsening AVN of the talus bone (basically means its dying) and progressive arthritis in my ankle joint and tibula? I think, one of the lower leg bones. He offered arthritis meds but I turned them down. Injections wont even help at this point. Im holding off surgery until after the Holidays and he was in agreement with me. As long as I can handle the pain! Last yr I spent Halloween on the couch in a non weight bearing cast from Oct 12 - Feb sometime and I promised my kids I would NOT miss another Halloween with them. It is getting harder to walk because of the hardware rubbing and the bone collapse, some days the pain is SO bad that I cant take it anymore but I want to beable to go trick or treating and shopping for Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas shopping!
This is a stock photo but it will show what I am talking about. I do have 4 screws in my ankle, 2 on the talus bone and 2 that start at my heel and go into the ankle joint (6" each). The talus bone in the 2nd picture is the bone I shattered in my accident and mine has collapsed and it sitting where my calcaneus is.
Because of the speed I was going when we hit my fracture had shattered my talus bone, turning it to dust which is the WORST bone in your foot you can break.
As long as the pain doesnt get too intense Ill be fine. My next surgery will be a complete ankle fusion, leaving no range of motion at all which is a rotten thing but my only option. Im too young for a replacement and he doesnt recommend it.
So besides hearing what I already knew at least Im not facing surgery in the next few weeks:)
