Its 85 degrees in here!! Yowza!!!
Last Spring Jas and I invested in a wood/coal add on furnace. It was quite a big purchase for us, between the furnace, the pipes and the masonry company for a chimney but WELL worth the investment. It will pay for itself within one yr. We heat with wood and coal, mainly coal! Coal(anthracite) is VERY tricky to work with, but we're getting the hang of it. We figure 3 ton of coal per season maybe 3 1/2. Which figures to a little over $400 for the heating season. GREAT!!!
During the beginning, back in Oct we were heating with wood. Had ZERO luck getting this coal hot enought to burn and stay burning. Jason was about ready to sell until I came across an ad on Craigslist and contacted this nice gentleman. I talked with him back and forth for a few days and forwarded all his emails to Jason. Needless to say, buring coal is no longer an art for us, ha! Its quite easy in fact!
Anybody in blogland burn coal? Im telling ya, if you have the opportunity to purchase a wood/coal add on furnace DO IT!
Yes the outdoor wood boilers are better but they cost ALOT more (and heat the same) and are actually illegal here where I live!
Jason starts a HOT wood fire in the morning, I go down and throw on 3-4 pieces of coal every hour or so and our 1400 sq foot house heats up to 75-80 on a cold cold day. At night hell throw a few pieces of wood on the coals and it will last til the morning:)
Im so lovin this wood furnace. When we first fired her up I was a bit scared of her but I can honestly say I am in love:)

I am so jealous. We walk around with the thermostat on 65 due to hubby's nosebleeds. You will find me in a hat and scarf while watching tv :) I guess you must have some snow and ice up that way right now. We just had a lot of rain.

Our house is always at 68 degrees and the girls are always saying how cold they are!

Oh man girls, I told DH last winter that I had enough of keeping it set at 65 and FREEZING ALL day!! I said NO MORE! My bones couldnt handle it - seriously! He wasnt here so he didnt have to deal with actually being cold so it didnt bother him. Nope, not me, no way, no how! I am so lucky to have this and thank God every day for it!!

Jenn, I am so glad that it's working out for y'all. That's a big savings!
We are total electric so when we have bad weather and lose power, we lose everything. We have a big kerosene heater in case of emergencies, but I hate it. Oh well, better than nothing, I guess.

I'm not showing my husband this post...he's run out and buy one:) He just put in an fireplace insert and he is like a little boy with the wood and all. Today I came home from work and he " See how warm it is in here? I've been keeping it running all day" It's 71 in here so I can't complain.lol

Jenn, we have a wood burning stove in our family room and I love it. The hotter the better for me. It gets too hot sometimes for Simon but I'm like you, my bones can't take the cold. What a money saver, too.

Hi Jenn ~ We burn wood. We have a Vermont Casting woodstove and we love it! It is in the family room downstairs and the heat comes upstairs and takes care of the whole house. I don't think it burns coal, but need to check the manual and see... Congratulations on your purchase and enjoy your nice warm home :) Hugs, Carla

We live in town and run our heat with electicity and gas which equals lots of $$$$$$. We have been talking about moving to the country and when we do I will tell my husband all about this! Our house stays at 67 degrees and I am ALWAYS freezing-I'm sitting here right now with a space heater at my feet! :)

You know, two years ago we had a wood stove installed in our home. And now no other heat quite warms us like our stove does. Now I'm wondering if coal is an option if we ever exhaust our wood supply? I'll have to look into that!
